PORTALES, N.M. – Greyhound softball is back in Portales for a three-game series against Cameron this weekend. Eastern New Mexico is coming off a set of games versus No. 10 Lubbock Christian and looking to build on its 14-13 (6-9 LSC) record. Before the Aggies come to the Land of Enchantment for a trio of contests, please take a look at the Four Bases:
First Base – Time to Attack: ENMU's offense has improved greatly this season as more Hounds are getting on base and extra base hits have come at a surplus. Eastern already matches last season's total with 17 homers and looks to top that mark against Cameron. The team is hitting .281 and has 202 hits through the first 27 games of the season. The Hounds are second among conference foes with 47 doubles just behind LCU in that category.
Second Base – Rewriting History: The Aggies hold a 31-4-1 edge in the matchup between the two programs. Eastern New Mexico last beat Cameron at home in 2015 in a 7-3 result. The Greyhounds hold one win at home, one win on the road, and two wins on neutral ground in the series. The programs met in Portales last season with CU sweeping the series and taking the final game, 4-2.
Third Base – Finish Strong: One early positive for ENMU in 2023 is that they are able to hold onto late leads. In games where Eastern has the advantage after six innings, they are 7-0 and 6-0 when leading after five innings. The Hounds have overcome seventh inning deficits twice this season as they are 2-9 when trailing after six innings of play. In games where they have scored in the first inning, Eastern is 7-1.
Home – Defense Matters: One distinct edge that Cameron is performing well with in 2023 is field percentage as they carry a conference-leading .978 mark over the first month and a half of the year. All four pitchers for the program hold ERA's below 4.70 and both players with ten or more appearances has below a 3.60 ERA. As a team, Cameron has struckout 134 batters and only struckout 81 times to opposing arms. Josie Swafford comes into the series with a perfect fielding percentage and a 4-6 record in the circle while limiting foes to a .180 batting average.
