Eight Lane Preview: WT Spring Break Open

Greyhounds begin outdoor season with a trip to West Texas A&M

PORTALES, N.M. – The outdoor track and field season is finally here! Eastern New Mexico is set to begin the season with a meet hosted by West Texas A&M Saturday. Before the Hounds head to Canyon, please take a look at the Eight Lane Preview:

1.) All-American – Timothy Frederick earned All-American honors at the 2023 indoor track and field championships last week in Virginia Beach, Virginia after competing in the 200-meter race. The junior is expected to run in the 100 and 200 during the outdoor season after primarily competing in the 60 and 200 during the indoor season.

2.) Go For More – Eight different Greyhounds competed at the LSC indoor track and field championships for ENMU last month. Those participants include Noe Ybaben, Ashlynn Evans, Tamia Smith, Tatiana Hall, Timothy Frederick, Paige Graham, Devis Cheruiyot, and Kennedy Ulmer. Four Hounds earned team points in their respective events.

3.) Hammer Time – One of the events the Hounds will be competing in during the outdoor slate is the hammer throw. The current record in the event on the men's side is 57.83m thrown by Bill Squire in 2011 at the ACU Last Chance Twilight.

4.) Discus Distance – Another event to watch out for outdoors is the discus. The record for women is 45.90m thrown by Kassie Daughtery at the Texas Tech Open in 2012. Tamia Smith holds the third best throw in program history with a 41.02m result in 2021's Corky/Crofoot Shootout. The men's record is from 1977 and totaled 55.85m.

5.) All Javelin – The top mark in the javelin for ENMU men is 73.15m set in 1976. The top toss belongs to Ally Salata who threw 43.93m in 2016. First-year student-athlete Kennedy Ulmer is expected to compete in the event for the Hounds along with a few others in the throws group.

6.) Continue Building – Last year Tatiana Hall, Tamia Smith, Paige Graham, and Devis Cheruiyot competed at the outdoor championships for ENMU. Smith threw 13.09m in the shot put to take ninth, also finished ninth at 41.11m in the hammer, and took twelfth after a 38.18m result in the discus. Hall finished twelfth in the javelin throwing 26.38m and sixteenth in the hammer with a 36.67m toss. Cheruiyot came in eighteenth in the 800m with a 1:59.33 result.

7.) Players to Watch – Four players were named players to watch in the Lone Star Conference's preview for the 2023 outdoor season. Those individuals include Timothy Frederick (track), Alexander Johnson (field), Tamia Smith (field), and Mahault Lebrun (track).

8.) Meet Info – The Spring Break Open will begin at 12 p.m. CT with the field events. The track events will begin at 4 p.m. CT and the meet should be complete by 8:40 p.m. CT. Lubbock Christian is also expected to compete in the meet.
