PORTALES, N.M. – Coming off a series win over Cameron, Eastern New Mexico softball heads to San Angelo, Texas for a three-game set with Angelo State beginning Friday. Before the two programs square off, please take a look at the Four Bases:
First Base – Setting Standards: ENMU beat CU for the first time since 2015 last weekend. The Aggies had won 18 consecutive games prior to the 15-3 (5 inn.) victory Sunday afternoon. This week, Angelo State carries a 14-game winning streak over the Hounds. The last win for Eastern over ASU came on the road on March 5, 2016 on a 12-9 result. The Greyhounds not only took one game over Cameron, but actually won the series for the first time.
Second Base – Small Ball: Both teams play very similar. Small ball. ENMU's
Mikenzey Patterson leads the program with a .435 average with 27 of her 30 hits coming via single. ASU's Ashlyn Lerma carries a team-best .404 batting average and has 30 of her 36 hits by way of single. Both players lead their teams in stolen bases and least strikeouts compared to players who are in the starting lineup primarily. Eastern New Mexico and Angelo State rank in the top-five among LSC foes in total sacrifice bunts.
Third Base – Hitters Beware: Between the two programs, fourteen hitters are averaging .300 or better at the plate. Nine of those are starting a majority of games and averaging two plate appearances per contest. For Angelo State, players to keep an eye for include Ashlyn Lerma (.404), Ashton McMillan (.381), Paxton Scheurer (.340), and Bailey Martinez (.338). Home – Battle in the Circle: Both teams have three pitchers who have appeared in a minimum 12 games this season. For the Greyhounds,
Brook Leger is 9-4 over 19 appearances and 14 starts. Leger is fourth in the league with 77 strikeouts and is holding opponents to a .245 average. The top arm for the Rams is Genesis Armendariz, but the other two on staff are just as solid statistically in 2023. Armendariz carries a 3.41 ERA with eight complete games and a 10-5 record. Cheyenne Floyd is primarily a relief pitcher, but leads the program with a 1.17 ERA and a team-high 18 appearances. The last arm for Angelo State is Torrey Hogan who is 5-4 on the year with a 2.40 ERA. She has 51 strikeouts on 67.0 innings of work and has only walked 24 batters.
