TUCSON, Ariz. – Eastern New Mexico track and field split up to compete at the Willie Williams Classic hosted by the University of Arizona and the Masked Rider Open hosted by Texas Tech University.
At Arizona,
Alex Williams broke the school record in the javelin. He took fourth among 22 participants with a toss of 65.12m (213' 7"). This was Williams second meet as a Greyhound.
In the men's hammer throw
Noe Ybaben tossed 30.94m (101' 6"). On the women's side of the event,
Tamia Smith took 15th after a 41.99m (137' 9") throw and her teammate
Tatiana Hall finished with a 38.27m (125' 6") mark.
Ybaben also took care of business with a 17th place finish in the shot put after a 13.60m (44' 7 ½") toss.
Smith also competed in the shot put where she finished in 10th with a 12.93m (42' 5 ¼") throw. Her teammate, freshman
Kennedy Ulmer, posted a good result at 11.53m (37' 10"). Ulmer completed the action for the throws squad with a great throw in the discus. She finished the event with a 38.51m (126' 4") mark.
The sprints squad was well represented at the Willie Williams Classic.
Kiara Cox (12.63),
Jaliyah Denny (12.88), and
Ashlynn Evans (12.95) ran the 100m. Cox (25.80) and
Meghan Rodriguez (27.54) entered the 200m for the Greyhounds. Both times mark personal bests for Cox.
Rodriguez posted a 1:03.20 result to take 28th among the tough field of runners in the 400m.
On the men's side,
John Magee ran in the 100m (11.44) and 200m (23.39), while his teammate
Timothy Frederick starred in the 200m (21.64) to take 11th among 47 competitors.
Evans earned an impressive mark in the triple jump as she finished at 11.30m (37' 1").
Mahault Lebrun also competed for ENMU in the meet. She earned 10th place with a 1:05.48 time in the 400m hurdles.
"There are a lot of positives to look at and we and improving and getting better," said head coach
Joshua Harden after the meet in Arizona. "I think it is super important for our student-athletes to put ourselves against good competition especially those you don't see often. It is important that we make trips like these."
On the other side, Eastern New Mexico was well represent at the Masked Rider Open.
In the women's shot put
Elise Toya posted a 5.47m mark.
Jha'Niah Johnson finished the discus at 33.47m.
Malachi Torres represented the men in the shot put as he threw a 10.11m best mark.
Luis Holguin cleared 4.26m (13' 11 ¾") in the pole vault to take 13th out of 21 competitors.
The men's javelin saw
Jude Murray (37.93m),
Alexander Johnson (33.16m), and
Jesse Woodruff (26.71m) compete for the Greyhounds.
In the sprints,
Malia Sanchez went 13.66 seconds in the 100m and 28.60 seconds in the 200m. Her teammate
Savannah Romero finished the 200m race in 28.99 seconds. Romero also took sixth in her heat with a 1:03.96 time in the 400m.
The distance crew got off to a good pace with
Kaylyn De La Rosa (2:26.56) and
Lauren Griego (2:35.72) posting solid marks in the 800m.
Devis Cheruiyot (2:00.13) and Aiden (2:14.77) competed in the 800m on the men's side.
Finishing up the Texas Tech slate was
Ethan Woodrome (4:39.68) and
Ricky Diaz (4:57.23) in the 1500m competition.
"The athletes that traveled up to Lubbock this weekend demonstrated the understanding of the difference between running and throwing and straight-out competing," said assistant coach Ray Putnam after the meet. "They are starting to show the grit that is needed to compete at this level."
The Greyhounds will be back in competition in two weeks as they will be at the Jo Meaker Classic hosted by West Texas A&M on April 7 and 8.
