Track and field competed at the Ross Black Open and Sooner Invitational

NORMAN, Okla. – Eastern New Mexico set eight personal records at the Sooner Invitational hosted by the University of Oklahoma this weekend.

"We had some pretty good things happen," said head coach Joshua Harden after the meet. "There are some positives to come away from."

Those include Savannah Romero (200m – 28.19), Maritza Alvarez (1500m - 5:14.51), Mahault Lebrun (400m hurdles – 1:03.79), Tamia Smith (HT – 44.29m (145' 4")), John Magee (200m – 22.94), Luis Holguin (400m - 52.88), Ethan Woodrome (3000 steeplechase – 12:18.31), and Jude Murray (48.21m – 158' 2").

Three women ran in the 100m dash – Jaliyah Denny (12.55), Ashlynn Evans (12.90), and Malia Sanchez (13.26). Denny (26.33) and Sanchez (27.90) joined Meghan Rodriguez (27.67) and Romero in the 200m.

Rodriguez (1:02.19) and Romero (1:04.78) ran the 400m for the Hounds in Norman.

Kaylyn De La Rosa continued showcase improvements in the 2023 season with a 2:26.53 result in the 800m. Her teammates, Alvarez and Lauren Griego (5:27.19), fared well in the 1500m.

Lebrun broke her school record in the 400m hurdles with an impressive run. She took seventh out of 15 competitors in the event.

The long jump saw Evans clear 5.17m (16' 11.5").

Tamia Smith had a good day in the throws events. She finished at 13.0m (42' 8") in the shot put and earned a personal record and fifth-best throw in school history in the hammer throw. Tatiana Hall joined her in the HT with a 35.59m (116' 9") toss.

Jha'Niah Johnson completed the weekend for the women in the discus with a 30.70m result (100' 9").

On the men's side, Murray (10.71), Timothy Frederick (10.74), and Magee (11.37) ran great races in the 100m. Magee earned a PR in the 200m and his teammate missed out on a PR by just one-hundredth of a second as Timothy Frederick (21.21) took eighth in a field of 46 runners.

Holguin's PR in the 400m helped the Greyhounds. His teammate Ricky Diaz finished the 1500m in 4:53.36.

Woodrome ran in the most unique of all races – the steeplechase. His finish marked the first in his collegiate career.

Murray shined in the javelin with the PR and Noe Ybaben did well in the shot put with a 13.52m (44' 4.25") throw.
