Two student-athletes better previous school records

Track and field sets several personal best marks, enters three teams in relay competitions

CANYON, Texas – Timothy Frederick and Tamia Smith entered the 2023 Jo Meaker Classic held by West Texas A&M as Eastern New Mexico's all-time leaders in their respective events. After the two-day meet, they left with personal best outdoor marks.
 
Frederick beat out his previous top time in the 400m by nine-tenths of a second. He finished the race in 46.94 seconds to take third in the weekend's competition.
 
Smith continues to raise the standards in the shot put as she threw 13.54 meters in the event. The junior continues to excel and took fourth in the field.
 
Seven others earned personal best marks with six additional entries participating in events for the first time to post top results.
 
The women's 100m dash saw four Hounds post notable times – Jaliyah Denny (12.23), Ashlynn Evans (12.59 – PR), Malia Sanchez (13.22 – PR), and Meghan Rodriguez (13.45 – first collegiate entry). Denny (25.96) and Sanchez (27.74) competed in the 200m.
 
ENMU was represented by Savannah Romero (1:03.76 – PR) and Rodriguez (1:04.31) in the 400m dash.
 
On the men's side, the Hounds had four competitors in the 400m – Timothy Frederick (46.94 – school record), Devis Cheruiyot (51.51), John Magee (52.75), and Aiden Kepfer (55.71 – first collegiate entry).
 
The squad also had three entries in relay events.
 
In the women's 4x100, Denny, Rodriguez, Mahault Lebrun, and Evans posted a 48.88 seconds time. The women's 4x400 saw Lebrun, Rodriguez, Kaylyn De La Rosa, and Romero showcase with a 4:08.85 time. For the men's 4x400, Frederick, Cheruiyot, Magee, and Luis Holguin clocked in at 3:27.61.
 
Three participated in the women's 1500m with De La Rosa (5:29.32), Lauren Griego (5:38.01), and Maritza Alvarez (5:38.75 – first collegiate entry). On the men's side, Ethan Woodrome (4:37.25 – PR) and Ricky Diaz (4:55.23) ran for the Hounds.
 
Freshman Lebrun went 1:06.53 in the 400m hurdles.
 
The pole vault saw Paige Graham clear 3.30m and Holguin finish at 3.90m.
 

 
Evans won her heat in the long jump with a 5.50m. She missed out on an entry into the finals by just a few inches.
 
Smith was joined in the shot put by teammates Kiara Cox (6.80m) and Elise Toya (6.03m). The men saw an impressive mark from Noe Ybaben (13.66m – PR). Malachi Torres (10.05m) and Josh Bachechi (4.72m) joined Ybaben.
 
Two Eastern student-athletes threw the discus. Jha'Niah Johnson marked a 32.19m throw and Jesse Woodruff beat his previous top mark by more than five meters with a 29.31m result.
 
Smith (41.74m) and Tatiana Hall (34.41m) did well in the hammer throw. In the javelin, a personal best throw by Jude Murray (45.50m) and Alexander Johnson (28.28m) led the way.
 
"This weekend was a solid meet for the Greyhounds," said head coach Joshua Harden after the meet. "Things are starting to come together as we start to move into the halfway mark of our season."
