LUBBOCK, Texas – On a cool, wet morning Eastern New Mexico cross country competed at the TTU Open.
For the first time this season, both programs held a finishing result. ENMU men's squad took fourteenth out of 16 collegiate programs and the women marked a twelfth-place mark against 16 institutions.
"The course was tough," said head coach
Joshua Harden after the race. "Lubbock got a lot of rain last night and there were some flooded spots on the course."
Matthew Guerra battled through the muddy conditions in his first race on the campus of Lubbock Christian University. His time of 29:06.90 paced the way for the Greyhounds and beat out four runners from Division I institutions.
Also finishing for Eastern New Mexico included
Ethan Woodrome (31:49.40),
Emmanuel Hernandez (34:14.40),
Ricky Diaz (34:23.90), and
Aiden Kepfer (36:59.40).
Kaylyn De La Rosa continued her streak of strong runs despite the unfavorable course conditions. The senior finished the 6k course in 24:59.00. Her teammate
Maritza Alvarez followed with a 27:54.00 time.
Albuquerque native
Lauren Griego held a strong finish at 28:52.70. The final two finishers for the Hounds included
Elise Toya (31:11.00) and
Jazmine Smith (34:09.20).
The Greyhounds now complete a stretch of three meets over 13 days. A two-week break is much needed as both teams prepare for the Highlands Cross Country Jam September 29.
