LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Eastern New Mexico cross country got the season rolling with the Lori Fitzgerald Memorial Open hosted by New Mexico State University.
Five different schools from New Mexico and a pair from Texas competed on the brisk Saturday morning.
The women got the day started on a fast note as both
Kaylyn De La Rosa and
Maritza Alvarez found themselves in the top third of racers over the first lap. Not far behind were their teammates
Lauren Griego and
Elise Toya.
De La Rosa pulled ahead over the second and third lap of the race and earned a 19th place finish. The senior finished ahead of all DII runner in the competition. Alvarez kept pace and took 30th in the event and was the third best finisher among DII programs.
Griego, an Albuquerque native, took 48th and Toya, a Rio Rancho native, took 52nd.
The men's side saw a strong finish by freshman
Matthew Guerra who clocked a 16:43.73 to take 45th. His teammates
Ethan Woodrome (56th),
Emmanuel Hernandez (58th), and
Ricky Diaz (60th) were not far behind.
