PORTALES, N.M. – Eastern New Mexico cross country travels for the final time during the 2023 campaign as they head to the Highlands XC Jam in Las Vegas, N.M. Before the Greyhounds head north for the next meet, please read the Cross Country Preview:
Greyhound Success: Last year, the women's team earned a first place finish at the NMHU meet. Current Hounds
Kaylyn De La Rosa (22:45.6) and
Elise Toya (24:09.0) represented Eastern in the victory over the in-state foe. This year, ENMU will bring a trio of newcomers on the women's side to the meet ran at the Gene Torres Golf Course. Current Hounds
Ethan Woodrome (26:50.5),
Emmanuel Hernandez (27:18.5), and
Ricky Diaz (27:59.0) competed at the meet. However, Hernandez did so as a member of the Mesalands Community College program and this year he debuts for the Greyhounds.
All Rested: After competing in three meets over the course of 14 days, ENMU had a much needed 13-day break between competitions. Seven runners have competed in all three meets so far for the Hounds. Those include
Ricky Diaz,
Matthew Guerra,
Emmanuel Hernandez,
Ethan Woodrome,
Maritza Alvarez,
Kaylyn De La Rosa, and
Lauren Griego. Alvarez and Guerra each have one top-ten finish this season with the result coming at the Mustang Derby hosted by Midwestern State.
The Competition: Eastern New Mexico, Trinidad State, and New Mexico Highlands will have both men and women teams competing in the event. Oklahoma Panhandle State is bringing a men's team. The women will run a 5k at 3 p.m. and the men will compete in a 7k at 3:45 p.m. This will be the fourth different race distance for the men's team during the 2023 season.
