PORTALES, N.M. – Eastern New Mexico track and field has spent the last month competing at three meets in three different states. This week, ENMU will stay in the Land of Enchantment as they will compete alongside some of the best DI and DII programs in the country at the New Mexico Team Open hosted by the University of New Mexico. Before Eastern heads to Albuquerque for the two-day event, please take a look at the 4x4 Preview:
1x4 – Provisional Marks: Last week, three Greyhounds hit provisional marks with two of those better than previous results. The Rumble in the Jungle proved to be a major success for grad student
Tamia Smith as she threw 13.74m (45-1) to win the shot put. Her provisional mark is 0.05m further than her previous top throw at the 2023 LSC championships where she took home the win. Smith ranks 26th among DII student-athletes in the event. 2023 second team all-american
Timothy Frederick now ranks 14th among DII sprinters in the 200m after a 21.55s time at Pittsburg State University. The senior will look to improve his time at future meets as he is not expected to compete this weekend.
2x4 – Homecoming Hounds: Five Greyhounds call Albuquerque home. Four of them will compete this weekend for the Green and Silver.
Mariana Marquez,
Meghan Rodriguez,
Savannah Romero, and
Malia Sanchez will run in various sprints Friday and Saturday. Romero, Sanchez, and Marquez will run the 200m at 4 p.m. Friday and Romero and Marquez will be back on the track for the 00m at 7:15 p.m. on the same day. Saturday, Sanchez will be the lone Greyhound in the 60m scheduled for 11:45 a.m. Four different Albuquerque area schools are represented by the program – Hope Christian, Volcano Vista, Cibola, and Del Norte. Two Greyhounds are from nearby Rio Rancho –
Kooper Ellis and
Kennedy Ulmer.
3x4 – Big Throws Weekend: Seven different ENMU student-athletes will compete in throws in Albuquerque.
Tamia Smith and
Allysun Jones will compete in both the shot put and weight throw and
Kooper Ellis and
Noe Ybaben Burciaga will do the same for the men.
Jha'Niah Johnson and
Samantha Medina will compete in the weight throw only and
Kennedy Ulmer will throw in the shot put. The schedule includes women's weight throw at 2:45 p.m. Friday with the men's to follow at 5:45 p.m. Saturday the shot put begins with the women at 9:30 a.m. and the men finish it out at 12:30 p.m.
4x4 – Jump Around: Two Hounds will be in jumps events this weekend.
Celina Thomas will try to will try to best her 11.26m (36-11.5) mark in the triple jump Saturday at 10:30 a.m. Two-sport student-athlete
Aeriana Langley participates in the high jump Friday afternoon at 3 p.m. as she looks to clear past her previous top mark of 1.54m (5-0.5). Two other student-athletes will compete in pole vault.
Luis Holguin goes at 6 p.m. Friday and
Minerva Cerda Hernandez will get things rolling for the Greyhounds Saturday morning at 8:30 a.m.
