MBB Starting Five: ENMU men's basketball continues road swing at Texas A&M-Kingsville

Eastern New Mexico men's basketball prepares for Tuesday afternoon contest versus Javelinas

PORTALES, N.M. – Eastern New Mexico men's basketball is coming off a Sunday afternoon overtime loss to Texas A&M International. The Greyhounds are now preparing for a matchup with Texas A&M-Kingsville Tuesday. Before the Hounds and Javelinas tipoff, please take a look at the Starting Five:

1.) So So Close: Eastern New Mexico lost in overtime for the second time this season in a 79-78 contest to Texas A&M International. The Dustdevils shot 9-of-30 from behind the arc and forced ENMU to commit 16 total turnovers. TAMIU found success from their bench as they scored 38 points from nonstarters. Eastern won the rebounding battle, 38-34. Second chance points was another area the home side took advantage in as they won that matchup, 19-14. The home side carried the lead for about 75% of the contest and extended their advantage to 66-55 with just over three minutes remaining in regulation. ENMU managed to go on an 11-0 run to tie up the contest and send the game into overtime. In extra time, the Hounds held the lead for the majority of the time, but a late three-pointer by Texas A&M International aided them to victory.

2.) Career Day: Jose Murillo had one of his best games as a Greyhound Sunday afternoon. The third-year student-athlete tied a career-high with 28 points. He shot 10-of-12 from the floor and connected on 8-of-11 free throw attempts. Murillo grabbed six rebounds and blocked three shots. He also had a team-best two steals. The Mexico native leads the team with 13 blocks and is second on the team with 46 total rebounds. One of the most impressive stats from Sunday was that he played a career-most 43 minutes.

3.) True Freshmen: Two first-year Hounds were called to play more minutes than typical in the matchup with Texas A&M International. Mo Austin guided the point guard role for 39 minutes. He finished the day with a season-high ten points and four rebounds. He added two assists and a block. Brandon Kehres ended up playing 14 minutes in the contest. The Las Cruces, N.M. native made his only field goal of the day. Kehres contributed a steal, rebound, and an assist. Both freshmen needed to play lengthier minutes due to some Greyhound foul trouble and a midgame injury.

4.) Among DII: ENMU ranks in the top ten in five key statistical categories. The Greyhounds are seventh among DII programs in steals (12.6 spg), scoring margin (+19.20), and turnovers forced (20.78 TO's/g). Eastern is ninth in fastbreak points (22.0 pg) and rebound margin (+10.20). Junior guard Cooper Jackson is the nation's leader in steals per contest (4.11) and second with 37 total steals. One area that bumped up this week is free throws made per game as the team is hitting 18.9 per contest, which ranks eleventh in the country. That number increased since the Hounds connected on 30 shots from the charity stripe versus TAMIU.

5.) Upset-Minded: Texas A&M-Kingsville comes into Tuesday's matchup after upsetting No. 2 West Texas A&M, 65-60. TAMUK was guided by Lone Star Conference offensive player of the week, Isaiah Payne. Payne scored 25 points on 12-of-19 shooting. He led the team with four steals and three assists in the victory. Three other Javelinas scored nine points in the outing – Zyon Little, Jordan Henderson, and Nate Lacewell. WT shot poorly as they finished 21-of-58 (36.2%) from the floor. Only two players finished in double figures for the Buffs. TAMUK is second in the conference in turnovers per game (10.1) and free throw percentage (70.9%). Payne is fourth in the conference with 62 total field goals and 176 total points. Allen Singleton leads the team with 21 total steals. One area Texas A&M-Kingsville struggles is field goal percentage as they only hit 40.6% of their shot attempts.
