PORTALES, N.M. – It's time for the 2024 Lone Star Conference indoor track and field championships and Eastern New Mexico will have 31 entries into the two-day meet. Before the Hounds head to Norman, Okla. for the competition, please take a look at the 4x4 Preview:
1x4 – Need to Score: Based on seeding for ENMU, the Greyhounds are expected to score 27 points on the women's side and 30 points for the men. The highest expected finisher for the women is
Tamia Smith who comes into the meet with the second-best shot put result in the 2024 season. Smith also comes into the meet with the sixth-best mark in the weight throw.
Timothy Frederick enters the weekend with the second highest seed time in the 200m and 400m races. If he finishes second in both events, he will rack up 16 total points. Last year the women's team finished in ninth with 15 points and the men's squad ended up in eighth with 10 points.
2x4 – On The Cusp: Four Greyhounds in five different events are going into the competition in Norman as the ninth-highest seed. These four competitors are just on the outside looking in and having a chance to score in the conference meet. Those Hounds include Helena Klutsey-Carboo (200m),
Celina Thomas (triple jump),
Kennedy Ulmer (shot put), and Noe Ybaben-Burciaga (shot put and weight throw). With the cruciality of each point, these student-athletes have the best chance to earn additional points that are not expected based on the seeding.
3x4 – In The Past: Eastern New Mexico women's track and field only earned points in the throws events just a year ago.
Tamia Smith led the way as she took home ten points after winning the conference championship in the shot put and snagged two points after taking seventh in the weight throw. Her teammate,
Kennedy Ulmer finished the meet in sixth as she entered into the shot put event. The men's team was led by
Timothy Frederick after he completed the 200m in third place and the 60m in seventh place. Former Greyhound
Devis Cheruiyot snagged two points in the 800m.
4x4 – Multis Time: Hemon Joseph will be the only Greyhound representative in the heptathlon this season. He will compete in seven different events during the competition. Joseph will be tested in the 60m, long jump, shot put, high jump, 60m hurdles, pole vault, and 1000m. His seed mark of 4632 places him seventh among the nine competitors entered into the LSC championships. Angelo State (4), Texas A&M-Kingsville (2), West Texas A&M (1), Oklahoma Christian (1), and Eastern New Mexico (1) have at least one entry into the heptathlon. The last student-athlete to enter into the heptathlon for ENMU was Ryan Cox who finished eighth in 2020.
