NORMAN, Okla. – Senior
Timothy Frederick earned points in three events at the 2024 LSC indoor track and field championships held on the campus of the University of Oklahoma. The 2023 indoor all-american proved to be a force in the short sprints among conference competitors.
"I was seeing my goal come for me," said Frederick on the weekend's performance. "I appreciate coach Harden and thank my teammates and God. I am grateful and can't wait to see what I do for nationals."
The La Brea, Trinidad and Tobago native came out strong in the 200m as he held the top time (21.77s) after Friday's preliminary round. On Saturday, he blew past the competition and beat out a runner from Lubbock Christian (Nathaniel Luna) who had a better seed time than him coming into the weekend. His 21.61s time earned him his first victory at a conference championship representing the Greyhounds.
The win guaranteed ten points for the men's team. Frederick is the first male student-athlete to win a conference indoor event since Marcus Parker and Kenneth Lloyd did so in 2018.
Frederick made the most of his trip to Norman, Okla. as he took third place in the 400m after finishing the race in 48.9s.
The last event of the evening also featured Frederick in the 4x400. A team including
Tre Buchanan,
Jude Murray,
Luis Holguin, and Frederick took seventh with a 3:26.50 time. The finish confirmed two points for ENMU.
Jamoi Jackson was another sprinter who scored for Eastern New Mexico this weekend. Jackson clocked in a 6.96s result during the finals on Saturday. If he had held the same speed as his prelims round (6.85s), Jackson would have earned a fourth-place result.
Two ENMU student-athletes earned crucial points for the Hounds.
"I am pleased with Luis and Noe. They had some ups and downs in the indoor season, but they came into the meet ready to compete," said head coach
Joshua Harden on the two Hounds. "Every guy that we brought to the meet scored points for the team."
Holguin competed in both the pole vault and previously mentioned 4x400. In the Friday pole vault competition, he cleared 4.20m (13-9.25). His result placed him in a share between seventh and eighth place points. Holguin ended the pole vault with 1.5 team points.
Ybaben Burciaga held strong in the shot put. He tossed 13.62m (44-8.25) to edge out a way into the group of scorers.
"It took a lot of work in the weight room. Coach Bell and Coach Walsh do a good job at training everyone," said Ybaben Burciaga after the meet. "I was really hungry to get up there and show that I am somebody people are going to have to worry about soon. I just worked hard after hours to get to what I want to get to. This meet showed that working hard really pays off over time. I am still working and keep going. I am going to be better for sure."
The Greyhounds will now await who will advance to the 2024 NCAA DII indoor track and field championships. The festivities are slated to begin in Pittsburg, Kansas hosted by Pittsburg State University.
