NEW ORLEANS – The United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) named the 2024 NCAA DII indoor track and field all-region honorees last week and three Eastern New Mexico University student-athletes were on the list.
Graduate student
Tamia Smith earned all-region honors after a strong performance in the shot put in 2024. Her 14.07m (46-2) toss at the New Mexico Team Open was the fifth furthest throw by a student-athlete in the south central region.
"Thank you for the recognition," said Smith when she saw the news. "It's cool to be recognized since I have been grinding all season."
Freshman
Grizell Scarlett earned all-region recognition after holding the fifth quickest time in the 60m among competitors in the short sprint. The first-year Greyhound opened the 2023-24 season at the JD Martin Invitational with a 7.46s result in the finals to take a win over five other runners from the University of Oklahoma. Scarlett is also a second team all-american for her finish at the 2024 NCAA DI indoor track and field championships in Pittsburg, Kansas.
"Being named to the all-region team feels absolutely amazing," said Scarlett after learning about the honor. "It's such an honor to be recognized for my hard work and dedication."
Senior
Timothy Frederick boasts two all-region honors. He was the top competitor in the 200m among student-athletes in the south central region this season after holding a 21.23s time. The LSC champion in the 200m also earned regional recognition for holding the third quickest time in the 400m dash at 47.67s when he raced at the New Mexico Collegiate Classic.
Frederick earned first team all-american in both the 200m and 400m after earning top-six finishes in both events this past week.
"It's a great feeling," said Frederick when he heard the news. "God is good indeed."
All three Greyhounds will look ahead to the outdoor season. The slate of competition begins this Friday and Saturday when ENMU travels to Canyon, Texas.
