PORTALES, N.M. – Eastern New Mexico University would like to introduce one of the newest hires in the department. Owen Sutherland comes to Portales as a graduate assistant for the track and field program and has been with the Greyhounds for the last two months.
Owen Sutherland, a native of Los Angeles, Calif., has been a graduate assistant track and field coach at Eastern New Mexico University since January 2024.
At ENMU he has helped the Greyhounds earn a sixth-place finish at the Lone Star Conference track and field indoor championships and an eighth-place nod for the men.
He has supported the coaching of
Timothy Frederick who is a two-time first team all-american during the 2024 indoor season. He also helped with coaching
Grizell Scarlett who earned a second team all-american nod.
Sutherland graduated from McPherson College in McPherson, Kansas in June 2023 where he ran with the sprints group.
During the 2022 season, he was a member of the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) distance medley relay runner-up's. In 2021, Sutherland was a member of the KCAC 4x400 conference champions.
The first-year graduate assistant holds an associate's in kinesiology from Riverside City College where he won a junior college state championship and made the dean's list for academic excellence.
Coach Sutherland resides in Portales, N.M. and is a 2018 graduate of Rancho Verde High School.
