PORTALES, N.M. – One of the best times of the year is upon us as the 2024 outdoor track and field season begins this weekend with Eastern New Mexico competing in Canyon, Texas. Before the first outdoor meet of the season, please take a look at the 4x4 Preview:
1x4 – Build On 2023: Eastern New Mexico women's track and field finished eighth among 12 conference teams during the 2023 Lone Star Conference outdoor track and field championships. The program retains all student-athletes who earned points at the postseason meet.
Tamia Smith took second place in the shot put and
Kennedy Ulmer earned seventh in the same event. The men's squad held a tenth-place nod out of 11 programs. All student-athletes who scored are back with the program in 2024.
Timothy Frederick paced the sprints side placing fifth in the 400m and seventh in the 200m.
2x4 – Nationals Outlook: One year ago
Timothy Frederick and
Alex Williams represented Eastern New Mexico at the 2023 NCAA DII outdoor track and field championships. This year, the two aspire to make it back-to-back trips. This year, the meet will be held in Emporia, Kansas with the host institution being Emporia State University. Williams finished the 2023 season with a top throw of 65.12m (213' 8") as he tossed that at the Willie Williams Classic. He earned all-region honors and third team all-LSC for his efforts in javelin. Frederick was a third team all-LSC recognize and also earned Greatest Greyhound and ENMU junior male athlete of the year for his commitment to excellence on and off the track.
3x4 – Ready For Canyon: Thirty student-athletes will represent the Greyhounds this weekend at the meet hosted by West Texas A&M. Five women and four men will feature on the throws side with three total making an appearance in the javelin. Two of those throwers will make their ENMU debut as they specialize in the outdoor only event. They include New Mexican natives
Deziree Bosquez and
Devin Gallegos. One of the other primary focuses for Eastern is the sprint group. Fourteen different ENMU student-athletes will be featured in at least one sprint this weekend.
4x4 – Schedule Is Set: The West Texas A&M Spring Break Open will be run over two days. Friday night will feature the discus beginning at 4 p.m. CT. Saturday field events will begin at 12 p.m. CT. Those include the high jump, javelin, and shot put. The first event on the track is the 4x100 slated for 2:30 p.m. CT. The day will finish with the 4x400 beginning at approximately 7:05 p.m. CT.
