Eastern New Mexico men's track and field posts several individual winners, personal bests at home meet

Greyhounds host first track and field meet since 2019, many top marks earned

PORTALES, N.M. – Eastern New Mexico University hosted a home track meet for the first time since 2019, Saturday at Greyhound Stadium.

"It was amazing," remarked head coach Joshua Harden after the meet. "To be able to have this for our student-athletes and have a competitive environment is big."

The warm late-March weather treated the program well as several Greyhounds earned a combined seven personal best marks.

Hemon Joseph posted a great performance at the home meet. He now ranks second in the nation with a long jump of 7.66m. He earned a second personal best result in the pole vault as he cleared 3.70m (12-1.5).

His teammate, Luis Holguin, also had a great meet for the Greyhounds. The distance/jumps performer vaulted 4.35m (14-3.25) in the pole vault. This marks two-straight weeks where he has achieved a personal best in the event.

In some of the short sprints, ENMU found a way to earn a couple individual top times. Tre Buchanan won the 200m with his fastest career race of 21.86s. His teammates Rosean Young (22.06s) and Malachi Torres (23.08s) also joined him in the competition, but did not eclipse PB marks.

Los Lunas, N.M. native Devin Gallegos took fourth in the javelin at 46.00m, but the most notable result came as he earned a personal best throw. His teammate Alex Williams won the event at 63.10m.

Kooper Ellis finished the discus in ninth with an individual best toss of 31.65m (103-10). Fellow Hound, Noe Ybaben Burciaga finished sixth at 33.57m (110-2).

The last PB for ENMU came from Bryce Owens who clocked a 53.18s in the 400m.

Ybaben Burciaga won the shot put after tossing 13.66m (44-9.75) and Ellis earned ninth after throwing 10.53m (34-6.75).

"Having the home meet was a great experience. It was great to see people from the community and students come out and check us out," said Ybaben Burciaga after the meet. "Shout out to coach Harden for running around everywhere and checking on everyone."

The quad of Timothy Frederick, Tre Buchanan, Jude Murray, and Malachi Torres won the 4x100 with a time of 42.34s. They bested the competition by just 0.04s.

Frederick did run the 100m, nearly hitting a provisional mark in the event. He finished in first place with a 10.68s time.

Distance-wise, ENMU saw Bryce Owens (3rd – 2:09.02), Ethan Woodrome (5th – 2:22.51), and Ricky Diaz (6th – 2:22.51) compete in the 800m. Diaz (7th – 4:42.17) and Woodrome (8th – 4:48.18) also saw action in the 1500m for the Hounds.

The Hounds will now set their eyes towards the Jo Meaker Classic & Multi hosted by West Texas A&M. The meet will run April 5-6.
