RICHARDSON, Texas – The Lone Star Conference announced the 2024 indoor track and field all-academic team. The honor is given to eleven male and eleven female student-athletes. This year, three student-athletes from Eastern New Mexico University received recognition on the team.
Representing the women's team are
Meghan Rodriguez and
Tamia Smith.
Rodriguez is an Albuquerque, N.M. native working towards a degree in physical education with a minor in statistics. The sophomore specializes in the sprints and holds top times of 26.58s (200m) and 1:00.46s (400m) with both marks set during the 2023-24 indoor season. At the 2024 LSC indoor championships, she was a member of the 4x400 team to take seventh at the meet. She currently holds a 4.0 GPA for her efforts in the classroom.
"I am grateful to be recognized as a member of the LSC all-academic team. I do my best to work hard on the track and in the classroom," said Rodriguez after hearing the news. "I thank God for the ability to do both and I am thankful for my coaches, professors, and teammates for supporting me and pushing me every day."
Smith is a graduate student who holds a 4.0 GPA towards her master's program. The throws specialist took second at the LSC championships and is a second-team all-conference honoree. She is currently pursuing her degree in counseling.
"I'm very happy to be recognized for my achievement and goals I place for myself in the classroom," said Smith. "I like to thank my professors that understand my busy schedule as a student-athlete to where I can still excel in the classroom."
Senior
Timothy Frederick represents the men on the list. The La Brea, Trinidad & Tobago native is pursuing studies in physical education. He is coming off a 200m win at the conference championships and a third-place finish in the 400m. He is expected to run in both events at nationals.
"It's hard to balance both," said Frederick when asked about the honor. "So, knowing that I am balancing both of them is a great accomplishment."
All three student-athletes will represent ENMU during the outdoor season.
