NORMAN, Okla. – Eastern New Mexico men's track and field made the most of their time at the John Jacobs Invitational hosted by the University of Oklahoma.
Friday's action opened with the decathlon where
Hemon Joseph excelled through the five events taking place to open the meet. His results include 100m (11.17s), 400m (53.86s), high jump (1.77m (5-9.75)), long jump (6.55m (21-6)), and shot put (12.39m (40-7.75)). He placed first in both the 100m and long jump among the competitors.
Joseph continued with a notable Saturday outing as he competed in the 110m hurdles (16.21s), 1500m (6:15.41), discus (ND), javelin (59.26m (194-5)), and pole vault (3.55m (11-7.75)). He finished atop the leaderboard in the javelin during the day's events. Overall, he placed second in the decathlon field.
"The atmosphere in Norman was exceptional. The sun was out and energy was there," said Joseph on the opportunity to compete at the meet hosted by OU. "I feel great to actually be back running almost pain free and being able to complete the decathlon. When I am back to full strength, great things are in store."
The throws group performed well to open the meet as two Greyhounds earned personal best's in the javelin.
Alex Williams (66.90m (219-6)) tossed an NCAA Division II provisional mark in the event to take first place in a field of 18 throwers. Â His teammate
Jamoi Jackson also earned a personal top throw with 39.61m (129-11) on his third and final attempt of the afternoon. Also competing in the event was freshman
Devin Gallegos who nearly clipped the 50m threshold with a toss of 49.61m (162-9).
The 100m was a crowded race with a strong field of sprinters. Both
Rosean Young (10.58s) and
Jude Murray (10.61s) placed in the top-20 among a field of 90+ runners.
Malachi Torres (11.29s) also competed in the event and finished in the middle of the pack.
Nearly 130 runners entered the 200m and around 95 actually competed in the field. Senior
Timothy Frederick (21.27s) took third in the race. Three other Greyhounds finished in the top-20 –
Tre Buchanan (22.01s),
Jude Murray (22.02s), and
Rosean Young (22.13s).
Malachi Torres completed the sprint in 23.54s.
ENMU had strong representation in the 400m as well.
Jamoi Jackson (48.61s) led the way among ENMU competitors alongside
Timothy Frederick (48.65s),
Tre Buchanan (49.37s),
Alexander Johnson (53.76s), and
Bryce Owens (54.17s).
Owens also appeared in the 800m marking a season best 2:02.23.
Representing Eastern in the long distance races was
Ethan Woodrome (4:56.22) and
Ricky Diaz (5:16.13) who posted results in the 1500m.
The throws group competed in a handful of events on the second day of action.
Kooper Ellis tossed the hammer 41.58m (136-5) and
Noe Ybaben Burciaga closed out the event at 37.34m (122-6). Ybaben Burciaga threw the shot put 12.61m (41-4.5).
"They battled against the wind, but still managed to come out with some good performances," remarked Joseph on his team's effort this weekend. "Overall it was a great weekend and we are looking forward for better things in the upcoming weeks."
ENMU will compete in Albuquerque next weekend at the Don Kirby Tailwind Open. The two day event begins Friday, April 19.
