Softball Claims Seven All-Conference Honors At LSC Banquet

Eastern had six different student-athletes land on the All-LSC list, with three different student-athletes making the first team

CANYON, Texas – Six members of the Eastern New Mexico Softball program picked up all-conference honors at the 2024 Lone Star Conference Softball Awards Banquet, held at Legacy Hall on the campus of West Texas A&M, on Wednesday evening. Samantha Gutierrez, Taighen Whitzel, and Alondra Vasquez were all selected to the All-LSC First Team, while Mikenzey Patterson was chosen to the All-LSC Second Team, and Marissa Rodriguez and Cecy Jurado garnered All-LSC Third Team honors. Vasquez also claimed a Gold Glove honor at 3rd base.
 
Playing in all 50 games for the Greyhounds, Whitzel was selected as the conference's top designated player, leading the team with a .387 batting average, 60 hits, and 24 walks. Earning their first career all-conference nod, their 12 home runs is tied for the team lead, while being in the top-10 in the conference for half a dozen statistical categories. Guitierrez earns their first career honor for ENMU, being selected as the conference's top catcher. The junior from San Diego, Calif. totaled 57 hits with a team best 16 doubles, along with 10 home runs. Their .383 batting average is 7th in the LSC, while holding a conference best .660 stolen-base allowed percentage along with 17 runners caught stealing, among LSC catchers.

Vasquez is the final name to be recognized to the LSC First Team, being selected as the top utility player. Earning all-conference second team honors in 2023, Vasquez jumps up to the first team after leading the team with 49 RBIs and 37 runs scored. Playing mostly third base and first base this season, Vasquez slugged .648 this season with 15 doubles and 12 home runs. Additionally, Vasquez was awarded the conference's Gold Glove Award for third base, given out to the best defensive players at each position. Vasquez finished the season with a .981 fielding percentage, recording 163 putouts and 48 assists. Vasquez is just the third Greyhound to win a gold glove award from the conference.

Meanwhile, Patterson earns All-LSC Second Team honors for the second year in a row after playing in 43 games and scoring 37 runs with a .386 batting average. They finished 14-14 on stolen bases this year and led the team with seven triples on the season.

Earning their first career LSC all-conference nods, Rodriguez and Jurado finish on the all-conference third team. Rodriguez was a dual threat for the Greyhounds, holding a team best 3.41 ERA with 12 wins, 12 complete games, and 62 strikeouts in the circle. In the batter's box, the sophomore provided 16 hits with 11 RBIs and four home runs, while drawing 12 walks. Rounding out the honorees, Jurado picks up their first All-LSC honor in their first season with the Greyhounds. The outfielder batted .381 on the season, posting 16 hits with a pair of doubles and five RBIs. They posted a season best three hits, with two doubles, during the Greyhounds 9-2 win over UCCS (2/9).

Eastern competes in the Lone Star Conference Tournament on Thursday, May 2, playing seventh seeded Texas Woman's. The first pitch is set for 10 a.m. (MST) from Schaeffer Park.
