SAN ANGELO, Texas – Eastern New Mexico University men's track and field did not have many entries for day two of the 2024 Lone Star Conference outdoor championships, but the program definitely made a mark with those who did compete.
The highlight of the day came towards the end of the night. Second-year Greyhound,
Luis Holguin surprised the field in pole vault as he finished third in the competition. Holguin did so by being one of three student-athletes to clear 4.41m (14-5.5). He earned the bronze medal because he cleared the 4.41m attempt in less tries than the other two who cleared it as well.
"I just competed to my best ability and ended up third," said Holguin on his evening. "Those late practices worked out."
With a busy schedule as a student-athlete and getting his primary coaching from Dr. Joel Sievers, Holguin managed to improve to the best of his ability. It certainly paid off as he scored six points for the men's team Friday.
The men's team also had opportunities to run in the preliminaries for the 100m and 400m.
Jude Murray will represent ENMU in the 100m finals after he posted the sixth fastest time (10.62s) among the field of 23 sprinters. Murray was within two-hundredths of a second to not qualify.
Also competing in the 100m was
Rosean Young who crossed the line in 10.95s.
The 400m was a bright spot for Eastern New Mexico today. In the group of 23 runners,
Jamoi Jackson posted the quickest time with a 47.31s sprint. His teammate,
Timothy Frederick stayed in qualifying range as he posted a 48.23s time in the prelims to take sixth. Both Jackson and Frederick will run at 2:30 p.m. CT Saturday.
"I had a strategy and I worked with it," said Jackson after the race. "I came out with a season best and I feel good."
Hemon Joseph completed the decathlon today and took sixth in the multis event. Some of his better events today included javelin (53.99m) and a personal record of 3.90m in the pole vault. Joseph managed to score additional points as he took seventh in the long jump at 6.89m.
The team currently sits in eighth with 11 total points. ENMU will close out the 2024 LSC outdoor track and field championships tomorrow in San Angelo, Texas with the finals of the 100m, 200m, 400m, javelin, shot put, and both relays.
