SAN ANGELO, Texas – Eastern New Mexico men's track and field showed out on the final day of the 2024 Lone Star Conference outdoor track and field championships.
"It was great. We went from scoring 13 points in 2023 to 48 this year," said head coach
Joshua Harden after the competition. "It truly shows as a staff the work we are doing is coming to work. Having multiple guys score in the top-eight gives us a stepping stone and I am excited to see what we can continue to do next year."
The day began strong with all four javelin throwers making the finals.
Alex Williams took second in the event with a 66.42m (217-11) throw.
Hemon Joseph finished in fourth at 59.39m (194-10),
Devin Gallegos took seventh tossing 47.03m (154-4), and
Jude Murray closed out the field in ninth with a 43.29m (142-0) throw.
Williams stood in third place prior to his fifth throw, but it only took the single attempt to place him in position to earn the silver medal. He took bronze in 2023 and improved his placing by one spot this season.
"It feels good because honestly I did not know I would perform this good, so I am grateful for that," said Williams after the runner-up finish. "It takes a lot of hard work, preparation, and taking care of your body."
Moving over to shot put, sophomore
Noe Ybaben Burciaga posted a strong personal best throw on his third attempt of the day. The Texas native tossed 14.24m (46-8.75) to earn a fifth place nod.
ENMU secured eighth place in the 4x100 with the team of
Malachi Torres,
Timothy Frederick,
Rosean Young, and
Hemon Joseph. The quad of runners finished with a time of 43.18s to give the Hounds one point in conference scoring.
The 400m saw Eastern New Mexico earn a podium finish. After qualifying in the prelims with the top time,
Jamoi Jackson crossed the line Saturday afternoon in 47.29s to take second place. Jackson's time is a personal best and 0.02s improved from his time from Friday's competition.
Jude Murray took sixth in the 100m dash as he crossed the line in 10.58s. The race featured three provisional times, including NCAA DII's current leader in the event - Isaac Botsio. Murray's finish earned the team three total points. It is his first time scoring in a conference event.
The final event for Eastern New Mexico for the weekend was the 200m.
Timothy Frederick took third with a time of 21.53s. The second-year ENMU student-athlete will now prepare for his entry in the NCAA DII outdoor track and field championships where he will run the 200m among the nation's top sprinters.
Eastern's seventh-place finish as a team is the programs best result since 2018 when they took sixth in the LSC championships.
