SB Four Bases: Texas A&M International

The Greyhounds welcome Texas A&M International for its home and conference opener

PORTALES, N.M. – Eastern New Mexico Softball plays their first home games of the season this weekend, beginning with a doubleheader on Friday, February 14, against Texas A&M International. The games with the Dustdevils marks the beginning of conference play, starting at 2 p.m. for game one and 4 p.m. for the second game.

SERIES INSIGHT

  • Eastern New Mexico and Texas A&M International have met 16 times before this weekend, with the Dustdevils holding a 12-4 edge, and a 6-4 LSC lead.
  • Despite trailing in the all-time series, ENMU has won four of its last seven games against the Dustdevils.
  • In last season's three game series, TAMIU walked away with a 2-1 series win, as the Greyhounds won the middle game 12-3 (5 Inn.), while narrowly losing 5-3 and 3-2.
  • The Greyhounds do have a positive record at home against Texas A&M International, with three wins and two losses. All of the games played at Greyhound Softball Field have been conference games.
  • Both teams first faced each other as non-conference opponents in the first meeting, as Texas A&M International came away with a 10-7 neutral site victory against the Greyhounds (2/5/11, San Antonio, Texas).

SCOUTING THE GREYHOUNDS

  • The Greyhounds (7-3) come into the weekend following two positive non-conference tournaments. Most recently, Eastern finished 3-2 at the WT Invitational, picking up a pair of comeback wins over Lincoln (Mo.) and a run-rule win over MSU-Moorhead.
  • Eastern's offense has been hard to stop in the opening 10 games, hitting .368 on the season scoring 88 runs from 109 hits. ENMU has produced 77 RBIs with 28 doubles, five triples, and eight home runs. In the circle, the Greyhounds pitching staff have a collective ERA of 4.05, giving up 50 runs and 71 hits. ENMU's is holding opponents to a .274 batting average, while recording 57 strikeouts.
  • Recently being named LSC Hitter of the Week, Aylene Lucero has gotten off to a hot start with a .618 batting average. Lucero leads the LSC in hits (21), runs scored (17), and stolen bases, while providing a team best 17 RBIs and six walks. Alondra Vasquez and Valeria Contreras both have 13 RBIs on the season, as Vasquez leads the team in home runs with three. Christina Meneses has seven doubles in the first ten games, leading LSC.
  • Miranda Guillen has a 2.88 ERA to lead the Greyhounds pitching staff, holding a 2-1 record in four starts in the circle. Jordan Rivera (2-0) leads the team with 23 strikeouts over 18.2 innings this season, while Marissa Rodriguez also has pitched 18.2 innings with a 2-2 record. Both Rivera and Rodriguez each have a save this season.

SCOUTING THE DUSTDEVILS

  • Texas A&M International (6-5) come into the weekend after going 1-4 at the ASU George & Ola McCorkle Challenge. The Dustdevils played five close games, with the largest margin of victory just being four runs over the weekend. TAMIU's one win came against Ouachita Baptist (3-2).
  • The Dustdevils offense is producing a .262 batting average, bringing home 38 runs on 78 hits. TAMIU has just 10 extra base hits this season (eight doubles, two home runs), recording 35 RBIs. Texas A&M International has excelled in the circle this season, holding a 2.68 ERA with just 36 runs allowed and two shutouts.
  • Kennedy Griego and Victoria Gonzalez both have over 10 hits this season, leading the team. Gonzalez has a team best seven RBIs and seven walks, while Kristin Maldonado has scored six times to lead the team. Jenna Fabela and Azalea Ramos have started every game for the Dustdevils alongside Griego, Gonzalez, and Maldonado.
  • Zakayia Fredrick and Kylie Goad are the two main pitchers for the Dustdevils, pitching close to 70% of the innings this season. Fredrick has a 3-2 record, while Goad has pitched 24 innings in four starts (1-2). Nevaeh Herrera has six appearances for TAMIU, throwing 13.1 innings with a 1-1 record.
