Eastern prepares to face #18 Oklahoma Christian on Sunday afternoon

PORTALES, N.M. – Eastern New Mexico Softball begins the month of March with a home doubleheader against #18 Oklahoma Christian on Sunday afternoon. The two games are expected to begin at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.

SERIES INSIGHT

  • Eastern and Oklahoma Christian face each other for the 23rd and 24th time on Sunday, as the Eagles lead the series 15-7.
  • The two teams started conference action in 2021, as OC hold a 7-3 advantage in LSC play.
  • In last seasons three-game series, Eastern New Mexico earned their first ever series win against the Eagles. The Greyhounds won the opening game in walk-off fashion, 2-1 (8 Inn.), while Oklahoma Christian won the second game of the doubleheader, 4-3. SCOUTING THE GREYHOUNDS

  • Eastern hopes to bounce back after falling in two close games against Cameron on Friday afternoon. The Aggies took the opening game, 4-2 and followed with a 10-9 win in game two. On the season, Eastern has a 13-7 overall record, with a 6-4 LSC standing.
  • Offensively, Eastern holds a .328 batting average, scoring 152 runs with 190 hits. The Greyhounds have collected 135 RBIs, while posting 39 doubles, six triples, and 24 home runs. Pitching wise, the Greyhounds have a 3.91 ERA, allowing 95 runs from 137 hits. Opposing hitters are hitting .261 against the Greyhounds, with the ENMU pitching staff striking out 110 batters with 78 walks.
  • Aylene Lucero has been the top hitter for the Greyhounds this season, leading the team in batting average (.500), hits (33), runs scored (28), doubles (7), walks (13), and RBIs (26). Valeria Contreras is just behind in the RBI count (23), holding a .408 batting average. Christina Meneses, Madison Begaye, and Alondra Vasquez all have a batting average above .350, with Vasquez pacing the team for home runs with seven.

  • The Eagles garner a #18 ranking in the latest National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA), holding a 12-6 overall record and 5-5 LSC record. Recently, OC bested Western New Mexico in a pair of contests, 10-4 and 7-1. The Eagles out hit the Mustangs 29-11 over the two games.
  • In the batter's box, the Eagles have a .320 batting average, scoring 86 runs from 147 hits. As a team, Oklahoma Christian has collected 78 RBIs, with 34 doubles, nine triples, and seven home runs. OC is a very strong defensive team, holding a 3.24 ERA allowing 65 runs and 106 hits so far this season. Opposing hitters hold just a .239 batting average, with 132 strikeouts this season.
  • Freshman catcher Marti Yaerger leads the team with a .471 batting average and was recently named LSC Freshman of the Week. Yaerger leads the team with 24 hits this season, while Maci George has a team high 14 RBIs. Kate Paulsen is an important bat in the lineup with 18 hits, eight runs, and seven RBIs this season.
  • Grace Anderson and Jill Dickson are the two primary pitchers for Oklahoma Christian, combining to throw 105.2 of the 119.0 innings this season.
