ENMU faces top-10 Angelo State on Wednesday afternoon

PORTALES, N.M. – Eastern New Mexico Softball plays the penultimate weekend at home, facing #7 Angelo State on Wednesday, April 16, at Greyhound Softball Field. First pitch of the opening game is scheduled for 2 p.m., with the second game expected to begin at 4 p.m.

SERIES INSIGHT

  • In the all-time series, Angelo State holds a 66-11 edge over the Greyhounds, with ENMU holding a 5-49 record in conference play.
  • During the first meeting between the two teams, Angelo State won both games in San Angelo. The Rambelles dominated the first game with a 10-1 victory, while ENMU fell in the second game 3-2 on a walk-off. Grace Rofii and Alondra Vasquez both hit solo home runs, while ASU scored in the bottom of the 7th in a walk-off win.
  • In the last home series against the Rambelles, ENMU surprised ASU to take the series opener, 3-1. Angelo State followed with a 10-2 win to split the doubleheader, then returned to take the series finale 4-0.
  • Seven of the Greyhounds 11 wins against Angelo State have come at home, with two wins in their last 15 home games against the Rambelles.
  • The teams first played each other in 2002, as the Greyhounds won three games of a four games series against the Rambelles. ENMU took the first three games of the series, winning the first ever meeting 6-4 (3/29/02).

SCOUTING THE GREYHOUNDS

  • Eastern New Mexico hold a 26-20 record overall this season, taking two road games from Midwestern State this past weekend to sit a 19-17 in conference play. With just eight games left to play, ENMU is tied with Lubbock Christian and St. Edward's for 5th place and are in the postseason picture (top eight make postseason).
  • Offensively, the Greyhounds are batting .307 on the season, scoring 276 runs, with 382 hits. For extra base hits, ENMU has 75 doubles, 10 triples, and 38 home runs.  In the circle, Eastern hold a 4.74 ERA, posting 253 strikeouts, with 247 runs allowed, on 325 hits.
  • Aylene Lucero has put together a great offensive season for the Greyhounds, batting .430 with 64 hits, 52 runs scored, and 14 stolen bases. Alondra Vasquez has a .377 batting average, hitting a team high 10 home runs and 41 RBIs. Christina Meneses leads the team with 17 doubles, adding 37 RBIs, while Valeria Contreras is batting .345 with 49 hits and 42 runs scored.
  • Miranda Guillen has been the driving force in the circle for Eastern, holding a 13-5 record with a 2.82 ERA. Guillen has 127 strikeouts over 111.2 innings, tossing 12 complete games, with opposing hitters batting .201. Cierra Smith started a game in each of the last two doubleheaders, with a 2-3 record and an 8.17 ERA. Jordan Rivera also has tossed a significant number of innings, 69.1 IP, with a 6-3 record and a 5.75 ERA.

SCOUTING THE #7 RAMBELLES

  • Recently, Angelo State was recognized as the #7 team in the nation based on the latest NFCA poll (National Fastpitch Coaches Association). The Rambelles are in third place in the LSC, sitting at 37-9 on the season, with a 28-8 conference record.
  • ASU are hitting .308 on the season, scoring 274 runs on 351 hits. Angelo State spray the ball all over the field, finding 63 doubles, 22 triples, and 35 home runs. In the circle, Angelo State sport a 2.16 ERA, allowing 112 runs over 294.1 innings.
  • Laylonna Applin has put together a tremendous season at the plate, leading the team with a .449 batting average, 62 hits, 15 doubles, seven triples, 11 home runs, and 49 RBIs. Averie Gunther made history recently for the Rambelles, playing every fielding position during the doubleheader against Sul Ross State, bats .361, while Tatiana Trotter has an OPS over 1.000, and Erin Plunkett leads the team in walks (30) and stolen bases (22).
  • Cheyenne Ford has tossed 41% of the total innings for the Rambelles pitching staff, holding a team low 1.54 ERA with 132 strikeouts. Ford is holding opposing hitters to a .166 batting average, with a 20-5 record. Amelia Hatthorn is the other primary starter with 16 starts in 22 appearances, pitching to a 2.55 ERA.
