The Greyhounds head to Silver City for N.M. rivalry with the Mustangs.

PORTALES, N.M. – Eastern New Mexico Softball battles in-state rival Western New Mexico in a LSC doubleheader on Friday, April 4, afternoon at WNMU Softball Field. First pitch of the opening game is scheduled for 1 p.m., while the second game is expected to begin at 3 p.m.

SERIES INSIGHT

  • In the all-time series, Western New Mexico leads Eastern 33-25-1, but the Greyhounds have the edge in conference play, as the Greyhounds have a 18-3 conference standing against the Mustangs.
  • 30 of the Western's wins against the Greyhounds occurred before 2010, while the Greyhounds have won eight of the last ten meetings between the two teams.
  • In last season's three game series, Western New Mexico came out swinging to win the opening game, 13-5 (5 Inn.), but ENMU won the remaining two games by a wide margin to take the series 2-1. ENMU won the middle game of the series, 12-1, while winning the series finale 12-3 in six innings.
  • Since becoming conference opponents in 2017, ENMU have lost just three games against the Mustangs, with two of the ENMU losses occurring in Silver City. Although the Greyhounds overall record is 11-20 on the road against the Mustangs, in their last 10 games in Silver City, ENMU is 8-2.
  • The teams first played each other in a neutral site doubleheader contest in 1998, with WNMU taking the first meeting, 8-3, with the second game finishing in a 6-6 tie (2/6/1998).

SCOUTING THE GREYHOUNDS

  • Eastern begins the month of April with a 21-17 overall record, holding a 14-14 LSC record. The Greyhounds recently split with West Division opponent, Midwestern State. ENMU took the opening game, 3-1, while the Mustangs won in comeback fashion for the second game, 8-6.
  • In the batter's box, Eastern has a .301 batting average this season, scoring 221 runs, producing 308 hits. For extra base hits, ENMU has 58 doubles, nine triples, and 32 home runs.  For pitching, Eastern holds a 4.17 ERA, recording 204 strikeouts this season with 184 runs allowed, on 260 hits.
  • Aylene Lucero leads the team in hits (52), batting average (.423), runs (42), with 32 RBIs and 18 walks. Following a three hit game against MSU, Alondra Vasquez leads the team in both RBIs (34) and home runs (9). Christina Meneses holds a season high 17 game reach base streak, batting .376 overall with 14 walks.
  • Miranda Guillen has been the primary pitcher for the Greyhounds, holding a 2.60 ERA over 86.0 IP. Their 100 strikeouts and .204 opposing batting average is a team best, with a 8-5 record. Jordan Rivera is next best on the team for wins with six, pitching 63.1 IP in 10 starts. Marissa Rodriguez is also a key pitcher, throwing 77.2 innings in nine starts.

SCOUTING THE MUSTANGS

  • Western New Mexico come into the Friday afternoon game with a 12-25 record, including a 9-19 standing in conference play. In their series, WNMU fell in a pair of games against #3 West Texas A&M, with the Lady Buffs winning 25-2 and 11-2.
  • The Mustangs put together a .284 batting average, scoring 179 runs on 265 hits. The Mustangs have as many doubles as they do home runs (41), adding seven triples on the season. Meanwhile in the circle, WNMU has a 7.57 ERA, giving up 289 runs over 227.1 innings.
  • Lauryn Carbajal and Antonya Lucero are the two standout hitters for the Mustangs. Carabajal narrowly leads the pair for hits (37), runs scored (24), batting average (.407), and RBIs (23). Lucero contributes a .383 batting average, along with 22 runs scored, 36 hits, with a team high nine stolen bases. Ciara Spencer and Madison George both have a batting average just above .300, while Abbi Markus adds an important 17 RBIs.
  • Four Mustangs pitchers have an ERA above 7.25, as Haiven Schoolcraft has a 7.25 ERA over 46.1 innings. Labraida Tenorio leads the program with a 3-11 record, pitching 63.1 IP with 30 K's.
