PORTALES, N.M. – No. 24 Eastern New Mexico men's basketball improved to 13-3 (6-2 LSC) with an 84-60 win over Midwestern State on the road last night. Now, the Greyhounds have their eyes set on a matchup with No. 5 Lubbock Christian tomorrow afternoon. Tip is set for 3 p.m. at the Rip Griffin Center, please take a look at the Starting Five Preview:
1.) Victorious Greyhounds: After two losses last weekend, Eastern New Mexico is back to their winning ways. The Greyhounds used sound defense and controlled the contest from the start. ENMU began the game scoring the first nine points and did not allow Midwestern State to score their first field goal until the 10:06 mark in the opening period of play. At that point, ENMU led 21-5. The Greyhounds continued to play defense with intensity and held a 41-20 advantage going into the halftime intermission. The Hounds led by as many as 35 points in the second half before the scoring frenzy cooled down and Eastern took the 24-point victory.
Treyvon Byrd and
Jose Murillo led the team in scoring with 18 points each.
Mo Austin had 16 points on 8-of-10 shooting. Austin also led the Greyhounds with a career-high seven steals.
2.) Playing Away From Home: The program improved to 7-0 in true road games with Thursday's win. Eastern is also 9-0 overall in games played outside Portales. Eastern New Mexico exceeded their win total on the road from 2024-25 with six away games remaining. It marks the first time since 2006-07 that ENMU will finish above .500 in road games in a season and the most wins in true road games since 2003-04 when Eastern earned 10 victories. The last time the program won seven-straight road games was during the 1992-93 campaign. The longest winning streak on the road for the Greyhounds is ten games which happened during the 1949-50 year.
3.) Among The League: Eastern New Mexico is tied for third in the Lone Star Conference with West Texas A&M at a 6-2 mark in conference action. ENMU is scoring at a high clip with 81.5 points per game and allowing opponents to score just 69.5 points per outing. The +12.0 scoring margin sits third among LSC foes. Saturday's matchup will pit the two conference leaders in field goal percentage. Lubbock Christian connects on 49.6% of their shots and Eastern hits 49.1% of their attempts. Another area where LCU excels is by connecting on 38.6% of their three-pointers. The Chaps are sixth in the LSC with 8.7 made three's per game. Rebounding is a key factor for both squads. The Greyhounds hold a +6.0 rebounding margin while Lubbock Christian boasts a +4.1 mark. The league's three best rebounders will be on the court tomorrow. Antonio Pusateri (10.7 rpg),
Jose Murillo (9.1 rpg), and Amondo Miller Jr. (8.9 rpg) hold the top three spots in the LSC in rebounds per outing.
4.) LCU History: Lubbock Christian holds a 40-32 series advantage against Eastern New Mexico. LCU has won the last three games over ENMU. All three of those wins came during the 2024-25 campaign, including a quarterfinal overtime win last year at the Lone Star conference championships. The narrow 79-78 win helped the Chaps advance to the conference finals and earn a berth to the south central regional. Lubbock Christian has won four of the last five games when played at the Rip Griffin Center. Another notable aspect of this matchup is that current assistant coach Lloyd Daniels played three seasons for LCU. In four career games against the Greyhounds, he scored 18+ points in each contest.
5.) In The Scout: LCU is riding a seven-game winning streak with a 16-2 (7-1 LSC) record. They are 5-1 against teams ranked in the top 25 and are 8-1 in games decided by single digits. Five Chaps score 11+ points per game. The leaders include Amondo Miller Jr. (19.8 ppg), Antonio Pusateri (16.0 ppg), Kendall Dow (15.2 ppg), Alex Anamekwe (11.1 ppg), and Lucas Mercandino (11.1 ppg). Five players have made 10+ three pointers this season with Dow leading the way with a 46-for-110 (.418) mark by himself. Lubbock Christian shares the ball well as they have earned 10+ assists in 17 of their 18 total contests. They also have four games scoring 90+ points. In Thursday's 72-57 win over No. 16 West Texas A&M, LCU had a season-high six blocks. The Chaps were led by Antonio Pusateri who had 21 points and five of those blocks. Amondo Miller Jr. nearly had a double-double with eight points and 12 rebounds. LCU was held to 1-for-10 from distance in the first half, but picked up the pace and connected on five in the final period of action. Very few fouls were called as both teams combined for only 23 total free throw attempts.
