MBB Starting Five: Western New Mexico

No. 24 ENMU and WNMU set to clash in Silver City on Sunday afternoon

PORTALES, N.M. – Eastern New Mexico men's basketball is coming into an in-state battle with Western New Mexico riding an 11-game winning streak. Before the 2 p.m. matchup set for Sunday in Silver City, please take a look at the Starting Five Preview:

1.) Streaks Are Fun: ENMU is on the longest winning streak since the team won ten-straight during the 1992-93 season. They are looking to match the 12-game winning streak from the 1967-68 campaign. The winning streak has included four conference wins and eight total wins over NCAA DII south central regional foes. Eastern also remains undefeated on the road with a perfect 5-0 mark. This is the first time since 2003-04 that the Hounds have won five-straight in away contests. They will seek to match last year's road win total tomorrow against WNMU. In 2024-25, the program went 6-6 in road matchups. The school record for most consecutive road wins came in 1949-50 when ENMU won ten-straight.

2.) Options Galore: All 11 Greyhounds who played in Friday's win over Sul Ross State scored at least two points in the matchup. Four different student-athletes scored in double figures against the Lobos. Sophomore guard Mo Austin led the way with 19 points on 7-of-9 shooting. He added seven rebounds, five assists, and three steals in the victory. Jose Murillo continues to be a problem for opposing defenses as he added 18 points, six rebounds, and two blocks. Off the bench, Elijah Hollins had one of his most memorable games as a Greyhound with 14 points shooting 5-of-7 from the floor and connecting on two three pointers. Senior Cooper Jackson added 12 points and facilitated well on both ends of the floor with five assists, four steals, and three rebounds.

3.) Lone Star is Watching: Eastern New Mexico is making noise in the Lone Star Conference as they are one of two programs still undefeated in conference play. ENMU boasts a conference leading +14.3 scoring margin. Individually, Jose Murillo leads the league in field goal percentage (.657) and blocks per game (1.6). Mo Austin leads the LSC in assists/game (4.8) and assist/turnover ratio (2.7). Cooper Jackson (3.2) and Mo Austin (2.9) are number one and two respectively in the conference in steals per game. As a team, ENMU ranks second in the Lone Star in rebounds per game (38.8), field goal percentage (50%), and opponent field goal percentage (.404). The Greyhounds are also scoring the third most points (82.7) per matchup.

4.) Catalyst for the Team: One of the key aspects of Eastern New Mexico's game when they are clicking on all cylinders comes from the bench play. ENMU saw all six bench contributors combine for 40 points in the win over the Lobos. The previously mentioned Hollins did an excellent job over his 21 minutes of action. Brandon Kehres did well down low for the Hounds as he posted nine points and five rebounds. His point and rebound total marks just the third time he has scored nine points and third time he has earned five rebounds in his ENMU career. He shot 4-of-6 from the floor. Alex Alfaro and Kobe Smith both had nice outings for the team with five points apiece. Both guards connected on a three pointer and had notable performances defensively as they both forced the Lobos to throw tough passes and not find easy scoring opportunities. Alfaro tacked on three rebounds and an assist in the effort. Modibo Sanogo was called into the game early and helped ENMU keep pace down in the paint. He scored four points and hauled in three boards. Zaylan Chaney played in his second game as a Greyhound and added three points, two rebounds, two assists, and a block in the outing.

5.) Upset Watch: Western New Mexico is looking for their third ranked win of the season as they are coming off a victory over No. 14 West Texas A&M on Friday night. The Mustangs have won four-straight games, which includes victories over No. 11 St. Edward's, (RV) Northwest Nazarene, UT Dallas, and No. 14 West Texas A&M. The rare Sunday matchup will feature two in-state foes who are a combined 20-3 and 7-1 in conference games. Two of those losses came to Fort Lewis who earned three point wins over both the Mustangs and Greyhounds in Portales to open the 2025-26 campaign. WNMU is led by Cortaviaus Seales who is averaging 16.8 points per game and has earned double digit points in ten-straight contests. Also scoring in double figures includes Carson Kelly (14.2), Isaiah Broady (12.3), and Andre Harris (11.9). It is important to note that Kelly did not play in Friday's win over WT. One of the brightest players on the court for WNMU against the Buffs was freshman NoNo Brown who had a career best 15 points and ten rebounds off the bench. His first collegiate double-double was sealed after he garnered five points and four rebounds in overtime before fouling out in the closing seconds. Broady (21 pts), Seales (19 pts), and Harris (15 pts) all joined Brown in double figures.
