PORTALES, N.M. – The regular season finale is here for No. 12 Eastern New Mexico men's basketball. ENMU prepares to face Angelo State at home tomorrow afternoon for Senior Day. Before first tip, please take a look at the Starting Five Preview:
1.) Back On Track: Eastern New Mexico responded nicely to a loss last week as they earned a home win on Thursday against UT Permian Basin. The Greyhounds earned a 101-75 win over the Falcons behind an all-around team performance. Eastern had 13 different players score in the game with
Cooper Jackson leading the way offensively with 19 points.
Elijah Hollins (12 pts) and
Kobe Smith (11 pts) had nice outings off the bench for ENMU. Smith's point total is a season-high for the Kansas native. Also, scoring in double figures was
Austin Abrams (13 pts) and
Jose Murillo (10 pts). The program had of their best shooting nights as a team going 39-for-66 (59.1%). ENMU shared the wealth nicely as
Austin Abrams (5),
Mo Austin (4),
Cooper Jackson (3), and
Treyvon Byrd (2) all had 2+ assists in the win.
2.) Forcing Mistakes: Defensive intensity allowed Eastern New Mexico to pull away in the game early.
Mo Austin made it challenging for UTPB to find a passing lane as he notched five steals. Zaylen Chaney,
Cooper Jackson, and
Austin Abrams all had two steals apiece. In Saturday's win, the Hounds forced 20 turnovers and scored 37 points from those situations. Jackson is third nationally with 79 total steals. Austin is fourth with 77 total. As a team, ENMU ranks top 15 in the country with 10+ steals per outing. Quick steals allow Eastern the opportunity to run the floor and get fastbreak points. The Greyhounds are top 10 in the nation with 18 fastbreak points per game.
3.) Mr. 200: Angelo State head coach Vinay Patel won his 200th career game Thursday night as the Rams beat West Texas A&M in overtime, 76-68. ASU earned 37 free throw attempts in the game and stayed tried and true to scoring in the paint. Angelo State made 23-of-52 (44.2%) of their shots from the floor. They were guided by a double-double from Ashraf Barsham. He scored 19 points and earned 11 rebounds. One cautious part of the game was that they gave away 15 turnovers and only went 3-for-15 from three-point range. Patel's historic win marks his 200th in just 12 seasons coaching. He has spent time at four different institutions and now holds 79 wins in his time in San Angelo.
4.) Ceremonial Celebration: The regular season finale marks senior day for Eastern New Mexico men's basketball. At halftime of the women's game, the four seniors for ENMU will be recognized at center court. Eastern will recognize
Jose Murillo,
Cooper Jackson,
Treyvon Byrd, and
Jaden Clarke. Murillo will finish his collegiate career as one of the most decorated Greyhounds of all-time. He holds career records in games played/started, blocks, and will break the minutes record on Saturday. Jackson has 144 career steals and is four away from tying the school record mark. He also has 150 assists in his time in Portales. Byrd has been with the program for two seasons and has scored 594 points and hauled in 278 rebounds. Clarke was the primary sixth-man a year ago and has appeared in 30 games in his ENMU career.
5.) Lone Star Picture: The eight teams are locked in for next week's Lone Star Conference tournament hosted in Frisco, Texas at the Comerica Center. DBU has clinched a share of the LSC regular season crown. A win on Saturday versus Texas A&M-Kingsville or an Eastern New Mexico loss will guarantee the solo title for the Patriots. Eastern can take the one seed with a win and DBU loss. ENMU will be the two seed with a loss and an LCU loss to Sul Ross State. LCU can get the two seed with a win and Eastern loss. Western New Mexico is locked into the four seed spot and Texas A&M-Kingsville is locked into the eighth seed. Those are the only two schools who have their tournament seeds clinched. Also competing in next week's tournament will be St. Edward's, St. Mary's, and West Texas A&M.
