PORTALES, N.M. — The Eastern New Mexico men's basketball team will be playing their first game in the state of New Mexico on Saturday. The 6 p.m. contest though won't be played in Portales but in Albuquerque at The Pit as part of the inaugural DII Basketball Classic. ENMU's opponent will be Western New Mexico.
Going into the game, the Greyhounds are 2-2 after losing two straight earlier in the week. The Mustangs are winless at 0-2 with both losses coming during the Skyhawk Classic last weekend in Ignacio, Colorado.
Eastern has a 47-43 lead in the all-time series but are only 2-7 when playing WNMU at a neutral site. The last neutral site contest was Nov. 11, 2008 in Grants, New Mexico as part of the Sky City Classic that saw the Mustangs come out on top 87-69. In the last game between the two squads in The Pit, the Greyhounds won 75-61 on Nov. 19, 2001.
Junior
Lawrence Domingo is the leading scorer for ENMU at 16.3 ppg and one of three averaging double-figures scoring. Also with at least 10 points a contest is senior
Michael Randle (14.0) and junior
Demetrius Balark (12.8).
Pacing the team with 2.8 assists a contest is junior
Deyton De La Cerda.
On the glass, junior
Jason Clardy is grabbing a team-high 6.8 rpg. Domingo is close behind him at 6.0 rpg while junior
John Gilliam has a 5.5 rpg mark as well.
As a team, the Greyhounds are scoring 86.8 ppg with a 40.5 field goal percentage and 30.0 three-point percentage. They are giving up 98.8 ppg and allowing opponents to make 47.5 percent of their shots although only 29.7 percent from beyond the arc. Eastern leads the Lone Star Conference with 45.2 rpg and have a -1.0 rebounding margin.
WNMU will be playing their third straight neutral site game to begin the regular season. Picked last in the 14-team Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, they are led by Brandon Tanter and his 12.5 ppg, 3.0 apg and 1.0 spg.
Tyler Shea paces the team with 5.5 rpg. He is also scoring 8.5 ppg while going 3-for-10 from the field and 11-of-15 at the free throw line. Gavin Wood is second on the team with 9.0 ppg and has made a team-high four threes as he came off the bench in the first two contests.
Offensively, the Mustangs are averaging 54.5 ppg with a 29.5 shooting percentage. They have made their mark at the free throw line having converted 47-of-61 (77.0 percent) attempts. WNMU has given up 89.0 ppg this year. Opposing teams are making 53.6 percent of their shots including 42.4 percent from downtown and have a whopping +20.5 rebounding margin (45.5-25.0).
