PORTALES, N.M. – The final regular season weekend is here for Eastern New Mexico softball and the Greyhounds are in prime position for postseason play and will be honoring eight seniors who have made vital contributions to the program over the past four seasons. Before you make it out to Greyhound Softball Field Friday and Saturday, please take a look at the Four Bases:
First – Senior Sendoff: Eight seniors will be playing their final games at Greyhound Softball Field this weekend. Those players include
Brook Leger,
Azalea Martinez,
Mackenzie Shaw,
Torianna Borunda,
Jordan Bowman,
Jokaira Paredes,
Kianna Galindo, and
Breanna Loyola. The senior day ceremonies are slated for ten minutes after the conclusion of Saturday's contest. This group combines for 676 total appearances for Eastern. Paredes and Martinez lead the group with 143 games played each.
Second – Postseason Implications: The Lone Star Conference tournament is almost set. Nine teams have clinched a berth into the postseason festivities with one final spot remaining. Three teams are inching their way towards the last slot. Eastern New Mexico sits half a game in the tenth spot with Texas Woman's just behind. In twelfth is Texas A&M International. TAMIU needs to sweep No. 3 UT Tyler to earn a spot in the tournament. The magic number for ENMU is two. If they win two of three games over TAMUK, they will earn the final slot no matter what. However, the number can shift depending on the result of the Texas Woman's versus Western New Mexico series. More information on the playoff scenario can be read here.
Third – Rewrite History: The Javelinas own a 64-19 series advantage over Eastern and are winners over the last nine meetings between the squads. TAMUK is on a five-game losing streak after a pair of series versus Oklahoma Christian and UT Tyler. The Greyhounds last beat Texas A&M-Kingsville in 2018 in a thrilling 11-inning battle, 12-11. This season, the team from the Lone Star state holds a higher batting average (.272 vs. .268) and a lower ERA (3.79 vs. 3.88). ENMU leads in all other major statistical categories.
Home – Prove It Patterson: Outfielder
Mikenzey Patterson is having a solid season for the Hounds. She leads the team in batting average (.382), hits (52), runs (39), and stolen bases (20). She has helped the team win 24 games this year, which is the highest total since the 2007 team won 29 games. The speedster is also a major reason why ENMU is one of the top teams when looking at offensive statistical categories among schools in the Lone Star Conference.
