PORTALES, N.M. – Coming off a home series against No. 3 UT Tyler, Eastern New Mexico is set to travel to Midwestern State for a three-game series on Thursday and Friday. Before the Greyhounds square off against the Mustangs, please take a look at the Four Bases:
First Base - In The Books: Even with 14 games remaining, the Hounds have added their names to the top-ten record books just over halfway through the 2023 season. Senior
Azalea Martinez' 15 doubles ranks her sixth in a single season. The most doubles hit by an ENMU player is 19 when Rachel Mohler did so in 2000.
Mikenzey Patterson already has 18 stolen bases this year which ranks seventh in a single season. The most for a Hound is 32 by Nikki Gay in 2003.
Brook Leger has four shutouts marking her fourth all-time in most shutouts in a year for an Eastern pitcher.
Second Base – Tournament Outlook: The Lone Star Conference tournament will take the top ten programs at the end of the year. ENMU sits in 12th among 15 conference foes fighting for a spot to play in the postseason event. The team they play this week, Midwestern State, sits in 13th. The Greyhounds have faced the top three teams in the league and only need to play one team left in the top-seven – Oklahoma Christian (4th).
Third Base – Mustang Memories: Eastern New Mexico has won two of the last three contests against MSU, including an 8-7 result in 2022. The matchup in Portales saw
Azalea Martinez and
Kianna Galindo hit homers and
Jennifer Gress record a win in the circle.
Jordan Bowman finished the game for ENMU in relief picking up her only career save.
Mackenzie Shaw and
Jokaira Paredes also started the game for the Hounds. In the overall series, MSU holds the 23-8 advantage. The Greyhounds are 3-9 when playing in Wichita Falls. All three of those wins have come since 2017.
Home – National Recognition: Not only is Eastern rewriting the season record books, the Hounds are adding their name among the nation's best players. Senior pitcher
Brook Leger leads the LSC with 27 appearances in the circle, fourth with a pair of saves, and sixth with 104 strikeouts.
Azalea Martinez is second in the league with 15 doubles and is sixth with 35 RBI's.
Mikenzey Patterson sits in second with three triples and sixth with 18 stolen bases. Lastly,
Jennifer Gress is fourth after getting hit by nine pitches this season.
