Eight Lane Preview: WT Last Chance Meet

Alex Williams and Timothy Frederick head to WT this weekend for the last chance meet

PORTALES, N.M. – A pair of Greyhounds will compete at the WT Last Chance Qualifier this weekend on the campus of West Texas A&M.

Alex Williams and Timothy Frederick will look to set personal records in pursuit of reaching the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championship. Before the Hounds make the trip to Canyon, please look at the Eight Lane Preview:

1.) LSC Recap: The ENMU Track & Field program had several individuals make the podium and score points at the 2023 LSC Outdoor Track & Field Championships held at Lubbock Christian University in Lubbock, Texas. For the women's program, compiled 26 points towards team scoring, with Tamia Smith and Kennedy Ulmer scoring a combined 19 points in the throws. The men's program, Frederick posted two top-eight finishes in the 200 and the 400, while Williams placed third in the javelin.

2.) Frederick Review: The La Brea, Trinidad & Tobago native has been outstanding this season, Frederick turned in a personal best in his most recent race for the 200 meters. After besting his career best (21.07s) during the preliminary heats, the Junior clocked a sub-21 second mark (20.99s) to take seventh place. However, Frederick followed in the 400-meter dash, sprinting to a fifth-place finish with a time of 47.17 on the stopwatch.

3.) Running Into the Record Books: This season, Frederick has stamped his name all over the ENMU Track & Field record book. The sprinter claimed the ENMU outdoor record following a 46.94 time during the 400-meter dash at the WT Jo Meaker Classic. Additionally, Frederick clocked a 10.49s in the 100-meter dash at the TTU Corky/Crofoot Shootout (4th all-time). Following a personal best in the 200 at the LSC Championships, Frederick now owns the third fastest time in program history (20.99, 3rd all-time).

4.) National Qualifying (x3): Heading into the last chance qualifier, Frederick has three marks that are listed as a national qualifying time. In the 100 meters, Frederick ranks 80th based on his 10.49 time in the 100-meter dash. The Junior currently sits in 26th for the 200-meter dash, holding a time of 20.99. For the 400-meters, Frederick is just one place outside the top sixteen with a time 47.05s (46.94 before adjusting for altitude). To reach the top-16, and assure qualification, Frederick will need to better a time of 46.99s.

5.) Williams Wrap-up: Williams has been fantastic in his first collegiate season with the Greyhounds. The Kingston, Jamaica product has been among the top throwers in the conference this season, culminating in a bronze medal at the LSC Championships. On their second throw, Williams recorded 64.59 meters to take third place and garner a bronze medal.

6.) Javelin Breakdown: In terms of program records, Williams has four of the program's furthest marks in the javelin, including the program record. The first-year student-athlete set the program record in his second meet with the Greyhounds, at the Willie Williams Classic, hosted by the University of Arizona. While in Tucson, Williams threw a personal record 65.12 meters (213' 8") to take fourth place against Division I competition.

7.) National Qualifying Mark: As things stand, Williams is 10th in the nation for the javelin in all of Division II. With the top-16 entries heading to Pueblo, Colo. for the National Championship, Williams is well on his way to qualifying for the national stage. Two meters separate 10th place and 17th place, with this weekend being the final opportunity for competitors to post a higher mark.

8.) Friday Finale: Williams and Frederick will head to Canyon, hoping to increase their chances of qualifying for the national championship. The WT Last Chance Qualifier is a single day event, with field events beginning at 12 p.m. (MST) and track events starting at 2:30 p.m. (MST). Frederick will take part in the 400-meter dash and the 200-meter dash, with a scheduled start time of 3:20 p.m. (MST) and 4:30 p.m. (MST), respectively. Williams will throw the javelin, which is scheduled to be the final throws event of the meet, with a rolling start of 1 p.m. (MST). The individuals and team that will head to Colorado for the national championship is set to be annouced at some point late next week.
