Tommy Joe Smith was a four-year letter winner for the Greyhound football team, from 1959-62 and played for then-Head Coach Carl Richardson. Over his career, Smith started 30 of 31 games, including seven as a freshman. He was a top left tackle and blocked for four Hall of Honors inductees, including Pete Jaquess, Sonny Wiginton, Jerry Blakely and Eldon Wetsel. In addition to playing on the offensive line, he also played defense, during an era, which allowed limited substitutions. Smith received his BBA in 1964, while also serving as a volunteer assistant for first-year Head Coach B.B. Lees. He was an original member of the Friends of Eastern, now known as the Foundation and Bench Club.
